Daisy Cutter - Eddie's, Birmingham - Friday February 12th 2010

Just when you thought Chop had disappeared off the face of the planet he's back with a live review!! Well for Chopmusic anyway... there's been plenty for Powerplay, Midlands Rocks, and even Terrorizer's website since the last live one was posted....

Shows you how long it's been since I'd been to a gig at Eddie's - forgot about the 10pm curfew on live music and therefore early door. As a result I missed Pieces of Beth. Sure they'll be around again in the not too distant future though.

Bite The Kerb were the first band I witnessed on the night. To sum up their style I'd categorise them as stadium rock, but with a modern cutting edge - Martyr de Mona spring to mind as an obvious comparison. Musically they were solid, I particularly liked the work of the six string bass player. Vocals were powerful with a good range. I felt for them as they went about their business - it's a tough life playing to the other bands and their entourages - and they deserved better support. But that's all too often par for the course on this circuit. Whilst not really my usual cup of death and destruction, I still found them entertaining and no doubt I'll witness them gracing a stage again soon - hopefully at a fuller venue. Setlist; "Like I Care!?", "From Within", "Spitting Teeth", "The Tenth Commandment", "Tungsten", "Standards".

Daisy Cutter had been billed as being similar to Queens Of The Stone Age and the description was most apt, although they reminded me of Pearl Jam and Alter Bridge too. They were very slick and have clearly been treading the boards for a while. The rhythm section stood out for me - it's always nice to hear a Fender Precision bass, and refreshing to hear a drummer content to use a single pedal instead of the relentless blasting that I normally observe. For a Norwegian band on tour to play to the scant few in the room was nothing short of insulting to be brutally honest. Hopefully they'll tour again and get the support they warrant. Can't fault their efforts - they stuck to their task well all things being considered. Setlist; "Sore Knees", "Derailed", "Queen Bitch", "Inside", "Fast Forward", "Land Of Alone", "No Joy", "Secure Settings", "Clarity", "All Is Fake", "Naked".
