Predictions/hopes for 2009
I never thought I'd see the day when I was writing about black
metal in glowing terms! However the symphonic and avant-garde
bands have really impressed me, and I can see this continuing
throughout 2009. Vreid's new album is astonishing, as is Exmortem's,
and Dimmu Borgir are touring in February. Should be a great year.
Festivals are assembling quality bills. Obviously there's still
a lot of bands to be confirmed, but BOA, Hellfest and Wacken should
all be stunning.
At this point I predict the following will have phenomenal success
and/or break through
1. Kik
2. Vreid
3. Mantra
4. Crowning Glory
5. Year Long Disaster
As for hopes, once the recession stops spiralling
downwards and confidence is restored, I hope that 2009 sees the
end of the armchair rock fan and apathy becomes a thing of the
past. Admittedly I've been to a lot of gigs this year, but by
the same token I've turned nearly as many down! Rock and metal
depends on live support - get off your arses and go to gigs! Seriously
the indifference surrounding the rock scene is shocking. The Midlands
has a lot of quality venues, of all sizes, but promoters will
not continue to loss lead until fans' apathy subsides. Speaking
of fans, if you do go to a gig, don't just go and see the band
you are supporting - stay and watch the full lineup. You never
know, you may just discover a major act in waiting.
Anyway enough of my rant! Hope the festive season brings you all
that you wish for, and here's to a metal-filled 2009!
Metallic regards
